the paper

The great influenza was the last major plague that happened. It began in the year of 1819 and had a fast growing rate. The ship yard in Philadelphia is where is started. The ship yard has about 3000 to 4000 people working on it and it started here and as you could easily imagine. thegreatinfluenza.doc   Everyone that came in to Philadelphia would come through the ship yard. The ship yard was the one of the largest in the US. thegreatinfluenza.doc The theory of the way the way the plague started was by the solider coming from over seas bang it in to the city and spread it at the boat dock
The plague had a death toile of over 100 million people. thegreatinfluenza.doc Some factors that made this happen and start so strong in Philadelphia where the fact that the city was over swelling it had 1.75 million people in it, the living conditions where in the slums, and the city had very poor hospital. All of these factors made Philadelphia “fertile ground” for the plague. thegresatinfluenza.doc The plague was worse than any human massacre that has ever happened. This death toll would be like roughly one third of the population of the united states dying.
The main way that the plague was ended was that it ran out of people to infect. The plague had infected so many people so fast that its main victims, young children with week immune systems, it died in 1920. http.doc The American medicine revolution led by William Welch had improved the condition of the plague by the 1920. The Rockefeller University along with Oswald Avery discovery of a DNA type of vaccine helped to strengthen many people I hospitals and gave people hope.http.doc
Once all the hospitals got filled up with infected patients, the cities would make tent hospitals and put patients any where they could so they could be under the help of a doctor if possible. When everyone was in the hospitals if you weren’t you stayed in side cause you didn’t want to be out cause of the possibility of catching the plague. http://www.exploresouthernhistory.com/fluepidemic1 The plague effected the US cities of Baltimore, Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Boston and New York, and New Orleans the first.thegreatinfluenza.doc
The Plague was worst then any war that the Americas have been in. The plague is still around but we are able to get vaccines of it in the US even though we can’t hold any in the United States. This epidemic virus is was only a year long and killed more the 100 million people, I think that they had the right technology back then and had the right scientist that we had today a lot of lives could have been saved. I think its scary that one little virus can do so much to a generation of people.

immigrants

I think that being a nation of immigrants means that out country is very diverse in culture. This is good because in ones personal preferences about life they have many different religions to chose from. The immigrants that formed this country took many risk that others where not willing to take. The reason some immigrants took these risk is because they knew that in america it was possible to be successful. I am glad to be from america and i think that the reason that we are called the country of immigrants is because many people want the freedom and liberties that Americans have in their lives.

To be from the Americas in most countries is a privilege and i think that the reason so many people are trying become a part of this nation is because they want a better life. Weather they came over legally or illegally they still where willing to risk it all to experience the country that I live in. To me this makes me feel like I have been blessed growing up here. This makes me feel like I have what other countries want for their citizens. I feel blessed to be from the USA., the country that was structured by immigrants.

History

In the films that we watched this week in class I found to be really informative about the ancestors of this country  and how they got to the Americas. In the films they explained and showed the ancestry of several people who are citizens of the united states. I thought that the pictures they where able to find where really moving to the people who had relatives in them. By being able to actually see the background and what their relatives went through seamed to make people really appreciated and want to go back to where originally from in the U.S.
These films made me want to research my own family background. I  found my self appreciating Yo Yo Ma
a lot more because of the rough childhood he went through. In his situation if his dad didn't get one job his life could be completely different. Even though he wasn't a violinist he still proved his parents wrong by being a master of the Cello, the instrument that he chose to play at age 4. These videos made me a lot more interested in my family hood and opened my views of who I am actually related to.

rockefeller

Near the end of Rockefeller life he started giving back to his community and spending some of his billions for the good of his community. When Rockefeller was starting out he had a goal to give ten percent of his wealth, or income, to charity. Rockefeller being a holy man he would go to the holy Baptist church  for advise on what charity to give his money to. The church wanted its own collage and so for his first charitable contribution the university of Chicago was opened. During Rockefeller life time he would give this university around 80 million dollars. From the university this charitable grew, the next contribution he built in New York and it is known today as Rockefeller university. In life time of  Rockefeller it is estimated that he donated around 550 million dollars to charities and universities the he built to help the community. The wealth of Rockefeller was so  enormous that he had a team of advisers to help his out with his philanthropy. these advisers eventually formed the Rockefeller Foundation.
